Dachshund
Short-legged long-bodied hounds with a bold personality.
Temperament
The Dachshund is a curious, brave, and spunky little hound with a big personality packed into a small body. They are friendly and loyal with their family but can be stubborn and independent, which sometimes makes training a challenge. Naturally vocal and alert, they often make enthusiastic watchdogs who are quick to announce visitors or unusual sounds.
Health Considerations
Dachshunds are generally a long-lived breed, often reaching 12–16 years, but they are predisposed to several health issues, particularly involving their back. Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is the most well-known concern; their long spine and short legs make them more vulnerable to slipped or herniated discs, which can cause pain, weakness, or even paralysis. Maintaining a lean weight, minimizing jumping, supporting them when you pick them up, and using ramps instead of stairs can greatly reduce risk. Other health considerations may include dental disease, obesity, patellar luxation, eye conditions (such as progressive retinal atrophy in some lines), and heart issues. Regular veterinary checkups, including dental evaluations and appropriate vaccinations, are essential. Discuss screening for back problems and eye health if recommended for your dog’s bloodline. Early detection and prompt treatment of any mobility changes, pain, or behavior shifts are critical for maintaining a good quality of life.
