Chinese Shar-Pei

The Shar-Pei is a distinctive breed known for its deep wrinkles and blue-black tongue.

Temperament

The Chinese Shar-Pei is a loyal, calm, and deeply devoted companion with a naturally reserved and somewhat aloof demeanor toward strangers. Independent and self-possessed, this breed often thinks for itself yet forms strong bonds with its family and can be quietly affectionate. Their protective nature makes them excellent watchdogs, but they prefer a peaceful, predictable home environment over constant excitement.

Health Considerations

Chinese Shar-Pei are generally sturdy but have some breed-specific health concerns that owners should monitor closely. Common issues include skin problems such as fold dermatitis and allergies, ear infections due to narrow ear canals, and eye conditions like entropion (inward rolling eyelids). Some Shar-Pei may also be prone to joint issues, hip dysplasia, or patellar luxation, especially if overweight or poorly bred. A particularly important condition in this breed is Shar-Pei fever (also known as familial Shar-Pei fever), which causes recurrent fevers and swelling, often in the hocks, and can lead to serious complications like amyloidosis affecting the kidneys. Responsible breeders screen for health problems and avoid breeding affected dogs. The typical lifespan ranges from about 8 to 12 years. Regular veterinary checkups, weight control, parasite prevention, and prompt attention to any signs of pain, eye irritation, recurring fevers, or skin changes are crucial for maintaining good health.
