Temperamento

The Akita is a courageous, dignified, and profoundly loyal guardian known for its calm confidence and strong protective instincts. Naturally alert and responsive, this breed tends to be reserved with strangers yet deeply affectionate and devoted to its family. Akitas are bold and independent thinkers, requiring consistent, respectful guidance to thrive.

Consideraciones de Salud

Akitas are generally robust dogs but, like many large breeds, they are predisposed to certain health conditions. Common concerns include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cruciate ligament injuries, hypothyroidism, and autoimmune disorders affecting the skin or other organs. Some Akitas may also be prone to progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), glaucoma, and inherited forms of deafness, so responsible breeders screen breeding stock for these issues. The typical life expectancy of an Akita ranges from 10 to 13 years with good care, proper nutrition, and a healthy weight. Regular veterinary checkups, including annual exams, bloodwork as recommended, eye and joint evaluations, and dental care, are important for early detection of problems. Discuss with your vet about appropriate vaccinations, parasite prevention, and whether screening for bloat risk and other breed-related conditions is advisable for your individual dog.
