The Chiweenie is a spunky, affectionate mix of Chihuahua and Dachshund, known for its playful and loyal nature. Highly people-oriented, they often form a very strong bond with one or two favorite humans and thrive on attention. Alert and energetic, they make excellent little watchdogs and love being involved in family activities.

As a mixed breed, the Chiweenie can inherit health issues from both Chihuahuas and Dachshunds. Common concerns include dental disease (due to their small mouths), patellar luxation (loose kneecaps), and back problems such as intervertebral disc disease, especially in individuals with longer backs. Eye issues, allergies, and obesity can also occur, so regular veterinary checkups are important to catch problems early. With good care, Chiweenies typically live around 12–16 years. Maintaining a healthy weight, using ramps or steps for furniture, avoiding excessive jumping, and keeping up with vaccinations, parasite prevention, and dental cleanings can all support a long, comfortable life. Responsible breeders will screen parent dogs for hereditary issues, but many Chiweenies also come from shelters and rescues, where a thorough vet exam is equally important.
