The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an affectionate, intelligent, and alert companion with a big personality in a small, low-to-the-ground body. Originally bred for herding, they tend to be active, playful, and sometimes vocal, often using their bark to communicate excitement or warn of something new. Their sharp mind and strong work ethic make them quick learners, but they also need consistent boundaries to keep their herding instinct and bossy streak in check.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are generally healthy dogs with a typical lifespan of about 12–13 years, and some living even longer with good care. However, their long backs and short legs can predispose them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and other spinal issues, especially if they are overweight or frequently jumping from heights. Maintaining a lean body condition and preventing rough, high-impact activities can greatly reduce the risk of back problems. Other potential health concerns include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and certain eye issues. Responsible breeders screen for these conditions, and routine veterinary checkups—at least once a year for adults, more often for seniors—are important for early detection of problems. Keeping up with vaccinations, parasite prevention, dental care, and regular bloodwork as they age will help your Corgi enjoy a long, active life.
