The Standard Poodle is a proud, highly intelligent, and remarkably versatile dog with a keen desire to work closely with people. They tend to be affectionate and loyal with their families, often forming deep bonds with one or two favorite humans. Alert and sensitive, they usually read moods well and thrive in homes that offer mental stimulation, clear structure, and positive interaction.

Standard Poodles are generally a robust and long‑lived breed, with an average lifespan of about 12–15 years when properly cared for. However, like all breeds, they are predisposed to certain health conditions, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, Addison’s disease, thyroid disorders, epilepsy, and eye problems such as cataracts or progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Bloat or gastric dilatation‑volvulus (GDV) is another serious concern in deep‑chested breeds like the Standard Poodle and requires immediate emergency care. Responsible breeders screen their breeding dogs for orthopedic, cardiac, and eye issues, as well as genetic conditions specific to the breed. Regular veterinary checkups, keeping vaccinations and parasite prevention up to date, and maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise all help reduce health risks. Discuss preventive steps with your veterinarian, such as feeding multiple smaller meals and possibly using a gastropexy procedure to help lower the risk of bloat in at‑risk dogs.
