Yorkshire Terrier

Small but bold terriers with beautiful silky coats.

Temperamento

The Yorkshire Terrier is an affectionate, sprightly little companion with a big-dog attitude packed into a tiny frame. Feisty and confident, Yorkies are known for their adventurous, tomboyish spirit and strong devotion to their people. Despite their small size and portable build, they are alert, bold, and often act as vigilant watchdogs in the home.

Consideraciones de Salud

Yorkshire Terriers generally live 12–15 years and can be quite robust for their size, but they are predisposed to certain health issues. Common concerns include dental disease, luxating patella (loose kneecaps), tracheal collapse, and eye problems such as cataracts or dry eye. Some Yorkies may also experience liver shunts (portosystemic shunt), hypoglycemia in young or very small dogs, and hereditary conditions like Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease affecting the hip joint. Routine veterinary checkups—at least once a year for adults and more frequently for seniors—are essential to detect problems early. Keeping up with vaccinations, parasite prevention, dental care, and maintaining a healthy weight can significantly improve quality of life. If you are acquiring a puppy, choosing a responsible breeder who screens for genetic conditions can lower the risk of inherited health issues, while adopted dogs should receive a thorough veterinary exam and ongoing monitoring.
